the indonesian island of flores is wonderful! however, since it’s not very touristically developed, compared e.g. to bali, we’ve found it fairly hard to come by information for independent travelers, like times and prices for public busses or boats etc.
here are some bits of inforamtion that were *not* easy to find out even while we were on the island:

komodo national park: staying on komodo island
almost anybody will try to sell you a 1 or 2 day trip to komodo island and surrounding sights. be aware that you’ll likely only have about an hour on each island, so any real hiking or quality time looking for dragons is more or less impossible. there are official hiking routes taking up to 5 h round-trip, and you can even get a guide for the day and arrange any length of hike.
if you want to stay on komodo island (there are homestays in komodo village, and a cabin that’s run by the rangers), there are several options. in order of descending easiness and price, you can… [more...]

four years “in preparation”, countless sleepless nights in the making.
here it is, finally: a video summary of our little family bike adventure from austria to spain, with 12 seconds of video clips per day.

to activate english captions, just press the captions symbol at the bottom right of the youtube player.

the video was created with gopro studio, a great freeware tool which also accepts non-gopro footage (though some videos may require conversion before you can start).

almost drove onto the autopista - no bikes allowedpreviously, on thinkoholic.com…

in the long long ago (a.k.a. 2009), my parents, little brother and i embarked on a small adventure through europe.
our goal was to get to denia (spain) right from our doorstep in rum/innsbruck (austria), using only our bicycles, while keeping the budget as low as possible. to make things a bit more interesting, we split up into two teams racing each other: team 1 (mom and dad) took a route through italy and france, team 2 (anton and i) went through switzerland and france. the team that arrived at our destination first, would win.
we sent a postcard home every few days to record our progress along the 2200 km journey and prove when we were where.

…here’s part three of our adventure: teams one and two – anton and i, reunited with our parents – cycling south from figueres, spain (near the french border) south towards our destination, dénia.

here’s a quick impression of our weekend hike to weißkugel, austria’s third-highest peak at 3738 m a.s.l.
the photosphere (360 degree panorama) shows the hintereisferner glacier, stretching out from the peak towards the east.

we reached this spot (teufelsegg) at 06:30 in the morning and watched the sun rise in the east. the day’s first rays of light crept over gigantic fields of ice. how come it took me so long to realize that the world’s beauty isn’t necessarily hiding a few thousand kilometres from home?

(sorry for cut-off heads and other body parts – not my doing!)

i’m not usually somebody who jumps off big things. at least not without a rope or chute.

here’s a picture of my first ever dive from a height of more than 1 meter, at wattamolla beach, royal national park, australia.
because the tide was low-ish, the water level was almost exactly 10 meters below.
