it was soo nice to be a student again for some hours! i enjoyed taking that tesdt (cryptogam systematics and evolution), just so i would be in university again…

here’s what’s new …old:
in a further attempt to catch up with the past – i know, the seattle/wa pictures are still missing here – i decided to publish my graduation paper (“fachbereichsarbeit”) for computer science.
the title is “Die TCP/IP-Protocolsuite”.
i originally wanted to write it in english, because in computer science every second word is english already and the german translations are somewhat stupid. but unfortunately there were some problems (bureaucratic stuff, graduation in austria, a certain english teacher, …) in the way of that.

aparrently, the filesharing program bittorrent now uses more than 35 percent of *all* internet traffic!

guess now we know why it’s called bittorrent!

sometime ago, somebody (yeah, it won’t get more specific) wondered why i had two (computer-)displays in my room.
when i answered that it’s not actually two computers, but one computer with two displays, she (ok, just a little more specific) was kinda “oh, i see. that’s geeky, but still ok”.
anyway, when i pointed over to the tidy notebook and said that that was indeed another computer, but just one for backupping/security, she said something like “oh yeah, because otherwise you’d have one or two minutes without a computer, right?”. she said it in a nice way, but still, i kept thinking about it.

and here’s the conclusion:
for me, my computer is uniting the following things/functions:

my mail,
my telephone (not only, but more and more),
my tv,
my audio-device (cd player, …or whatever),
my banks,
my newspapers/news,
my encyclopedia, dictionary, source of knowledge,
my university – especially right now,
my very own 24/7 exhibition,
a big part of “keeping up with friends and (still) strangers”

that might not be very uncommon elsewhere, but i feel like in austria it still is.

so this is why i would gladly prefer a computer w/ internet connection to …a lot of things.
i know, i am a geek.

this is funny:

yesterday i received an email of a very-remote-acquaintance who was seeking computer help.
her question was: “what should i do if i can’t get an internet connection?”

let’s back up here: she sent an email telling me that her internet-access didn’t work.

to be fair: there is a slim chance that she wanted to say something like “it works now, but what should i do if i ever don’t get a connection?”, but i don’t really think that’s the case here…

for some reason, all computers i touch lately seem to just go nuts and crash.
first, my main-pc-harddisk falls apart only 7 months after buying it *newly*.
then, i reset my brother’s handheld within 10 minutes of holding it in my hands (ok, that one was my fault!).
and now, when my laptop gets too hot (due to longterm usage), it just reboots (no logging of or so, it just boots again and discards everything i’ve just done) – which is not the big problem! i just had to get my mailprog & addressbook back and rearrange it and update it and get the email-rules set for the about 25th time in 4 weeks!
i’m backing up regularly now (everything!), but there’s something to manually restore every time.

I’M GOING CRAZY!!

as you may have noticed, the most recent posts have german titles as well.
in the following time i’m going to add a little “switch” that will read the language from your keyboard-setting and apply it to the galleries.

of course it will still be possible to choose a different language (but you’ll have to stick with english and german, for now).

right now i just don’t have the time to do all of it, so as a temporary solution both german and english titles will be displayed.

[lyrics quote of the moment]
i get such a thrill when you look in my eyes,
my heart skips a beat, girl, i feel so alive!
