on june 16, my parents and i went for a hike in the kaisertal valley. scully came along as well, and she had a lot of fun playing in the water…

lady's slipper orchid (cypripedium calceolus)

i had been told that the lady’s slipper orchids were starting to bloom there that weekend.
in fact, we saw several species of orchids blooming on the 5-hour-walk, but the lady’s slippers were the absolute highlight.
there are only a few valleys/locations left with these magnificent flowers, so it’s a strictly protected species. in the lechtal valley, for example, they have 24-hour-surveillance when the plants are in bloom.
